Lambrusco’s Gentle Revolution Begins with the Guardians of Lambrusco
In the heart of Emilia, a quiet yet powerful revolution is taking shape. Lambrusco now has its Guardians: twenty-six wineries – both small-scale producers and historic estates – have come together with a shared vision to defend, promote, and elevate this iconic wine. Their goal? To bring this wine back into the spotlight as one of Italy’s great wines.
Stepping beyond existing institutional frameworks and regional boundaries, these winemakers have chosen to collaborate closely to tell a new story – one that’s inclusive, forward-thinking, and rooted in quality. Thus, the Custodi del Lambrusco (Guardians of Lambrusco) association was founded —a collective effort to reshape the public perception of a wine that is often underestimated, despite its deep cultural and historical roots.
What unites them is a commitment to excellence. From vineyard to bottle, every choice is guided by a single principle: to highlight the true character of Lambrusco, enhancing its quality and celebrating its diverse expressions. “This is more than a matter of protection – it’s about recognition,” explains Fabio Altariva, President of the Guardians of Lambrusco. “Lambrusco is history, culture, and the identity of an entire region. It deserves to be acknowledged as such.”
“Our mission,” Altariva continues, “is to rewrite the future of Lambrusco. We want to showcase its true value, without compromise, and restore it to its rightful place among the great wines of the world.”
From the Heart of Emilia to a Global Vision
Modena and Reggio Emilia – the historic heartlands of this wine – are also home to the wineries driving this ambitious project forward. With passion, dedication, and an eye to the future, the Guardians of Lambrusco are ready to open a new chapter in the story of this extraordinary wine.
Because Lambrusco deserves to be celebrated, respected, and above all, preserved.
